New BJF support celebrates culture while enhancing safety

A series of recently announced grants from the BJF provides $9,000 to boost two Levite JCC programs, plus an additional $70,000 that will further strengthen security at the venerable institution.

“We’re so grateful for these grants that help ensure that our campus remains a safe and welcoming space for everyone,” says Brooke Bowles, CEO of the Levite JCC. “As we prioritize Jewish ‘joy’ and continue offering more Jewish programs, we recognize that rising antisemitism remains a serious-enough threat that the more programming we offer, the more security we need.” Read the full story...

FOOD FEST FEATURE

Rolling out the rugelach

This year’s Jewish Food and Culture Fest on April 26 will bring some sweet (and savory) upgrades to a menu that’s always drawn a crowd. Alongside longtime favorites, festivalgoers can look forward to a lineup of traditional baked goods, including homemade hamantaschen, apple cake, rugelach, and mandelbread.

Perhaps most notably, the rugelach is undergoing a major upgrade as it gets made from scratch, promising a fresher and more authentic taste. Get all the details...

Remembering civil rights activist, longtime LJCC member J. Mason Davis

J. Mason Davis, whom The Birmingham Times calls "a trailblazing attorney whose legal work helped dismantle segregation in Alabama and whose leadership shaped generations of lawyers and community advocates," died on Saturday at age 90. The activist also had been a Levite JCC member since 1989. Read more at AL.com, WVTM 13, The Philadelphia Tribune, and other local and national news outlets...

Host our shlicha

The Levite JCC is excited to welcome a shlicha | Israeli emissary to our community this summer, and we're looking for host families to open their homes for at least one two-week slot during her nine-week stay. Our visitor is 21 and will be working at J Camp.

We are seeking Jewish families — especially those with children attending J Camp (although all Jewish households with or without children will be considered). Hosting is a meaningful opportunity to build a personal connection with Israel while offering a supportive home base for a young adult experiencing life in our community. Learn more and apply...
