Jews in the Alabama hinterlands

"Looking at Birmingham as a whole, most people here are pretty rooted," writes amateur historian Zach Dembo in his latest piece about Birmingham's Jewish history. "The vast majority of the general population of the Magic City, around 80 percent, are lifelong Alabamians. But that pattern doesn’t quite hold for the Jewish community." Read the full story...

Tzedakah for trees

Cohn Early Childhood Learning Center 2-, 3-, and 4-year-olds recently participated in a project tied to the Tu B’Shvat | New Year of the Trees holiday that involved collecting tzedakah | charity to help plant trees in Israel. The funds were collected in tzedakah boxes decorated by the kids (see photo).

“This project gave our children the opportunity to explore the values of kindness, responsibility, and giving while connecting them to nature and the global Jewish community,” says Cohn ECLC Director Inna Shepard. “We are so proud of the enthusiasm.”
