May Youth Protection Focus: Mental Health
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a reminder that mental well‑being is just as important as physical health. At the Y, we notice when youth are struggling and provide calm, consistent spaces where they can connect, regroup and feel safe. Families can support their youth by checking in regularly and listening without judgment. Try a quick routine at dinner or bedtime, asking:
What was your high today? Your low?
Anything you want me to know?
Normalize talking about feelings. Help your youth identify coping strategies that work for them, from movement and music to journaling or quiet time. If something seems bigger than a rough day, remind your youth that asking for help is a sign of strength. When youth know they can share openly and find support, they build resilience, trust and the confidence to navigate challenges. 💙
