YOUTH PROTECTION

Youth Protection at your Y

At the Y, every youth deserves safe, supportive adults. January is National Mentoring Month, a time to celebrate mentors and reflect on what makes a trusted adult. In that spirit…

Talk with your youth about who they can go to when they need advice or support. Naming safe adults helps youth know where to turn if they ever feel uncomfortable or unsure. Families can model this by pointing out safe, trustworthy adults in your community—teachers, relatives, neighbors, coaches and Y staff.

Try asking, Who are the adults you trust most? What makes them safe?

These conversations teach youth to notice healthy qualities like listening, consistency and clear boundaries. At the Y, we work every day to build supportive relationships while maintaining professional boundaries that keep youth safe. A quick check‑in this month—such as posting a list of safe adults on the fridge or in a journal—can reassure youth that they never have to face problems alone. There are always caring adults ready to listen, believe, and help 🧡
